In late January, the New Orleans Hornets announced that beginning in the 2013-14 season, the team will be known as the New Orleans Pelicans. “Our colors are blue, gold and red. Blue, gold and red are the same colors we have on the flag of the city of New Orleans,” said Hornets team president Dennis Lauscha.
The New Orleans mayor was equally elated with the name change. “We are witnessing a city that, in partnership with the Saints and Hornets, has completely reinvented itself just with the power of resilience. This name reflects that will power and that resilience,” said Mitch Landrieu.
Which got me thinking.
How many professional sports teams could have nicknames better suited for the city where they play? For example, the Hornets name was kept after the team re-located from Charlotte to New Orleans for the 2002 season. I looked it up and apparently there is not a proliferation of bees in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to the franchise’s Wikipedia page: the name was derived from Charlotte’s fierce resistance to British occupation during the Revolutionary War. The Pelican, on the other hand, is the state bird of Louisiana which also fielded a minor league baseball team of the same name during the early 1970s.
